Worth Fighting For

Frodo: I can’t do this, Sam.
Sam: I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam: That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo… and it’s worth fighting for.

I seem to get more and more contacts from people who want to live and do what I am living and doing. It occurs to me more profoundly on a daily basis that there are hundreds or thousands of people out there who want to see me and my family succeed. It is truly humbling. Sometimes it feels as if by no fault of my own I have had the ring of power come into my grasp and the whole world either wants it destroyed or seeks it themselves. Yet, it is not something we can destroy of our own power, but something that can be destroyed only by sticking to our destined path. There are so many people out there who are staring out into the growing darkness and look for a sign of hope. I hope to some I can be a signal bearer. That some will see that there is still some good in this world and it is worth fighting for. There are many different battles to be waged in this war. Some will carry the sword of the Spirit into battle, and others will fight this war by silently carrying on a personal battle against the darkness in their own homes. We are in the story and we have a part to play. Every single one of us has a part to play and what is important is that we not turn back. When the darkness has passed the sun will shine out all the brighter and a new day will dawn. Hope springs eternal. The reign of the Sacred and Immaculate hearts will come in the end. The shadow of our present day will pass. I know not if I will still stand on this earth or if it will pass only for my chidren or my children's children, but I know with the certainty of faith that the shadow will pass. There is hope for a rebuilding of the shire after it is sacked by secularism and modernism. I will stick to my path, and if along the way I must lose everything to gain everything I know that there is hope for those that will come after me. For all those who are out there in the void wondering if the darkness will ever fade, it will! Morning came on the third day and death was defeated. The war for our present day is but a skirmish in the great battle. Christ is the King and the Victor and in the end He will reign.

Very inspiring. I like how you said we each have parts to play. Very true. And teaching our children is the top one.

Kevin, other supporters of you include a small, young family in Northern Vermont. We are seriously considering a transition from a secure, teaching life to a small farm life, modeling ourselves after the 3 acres and a cow. We read your blog for hope, but also for a way in which to truly evaluate and "try on" the reality of living out the Catholic Land Movement. How we wish that you were closer, that we could all join forces and start a Catholic Land Movement together! But alas, we are all very far apart. In the landscape of the internet, we are all so close, and there are so many of us. But in the landscape of our lives, we are so alone. Peace be with you and yours, Ford family.

With love and prayers,
The Barkers
